Depping with Mundy

July 14, 2022

It’s not my drumming gig, and I very much respect that, but I love the music and would be delighted to fill in when I’m needed.

The Happy Mundys

I had the pleasure of playing my first gig with Mundy at Castlecomer GAA grounds last week. The rehearsal was great and the sound was very Zeppelinesque and ‘blended’ , with lovely tones and notes all swilling around in a big room in a big country house. But the gig itself was tough. Mundy had terrible luck with technical issues at the gig for the first 3 or 4 songs and we had one of those sound monitor men who made very little effort to check in on us and couldn’t be found or seen from the stage. We got through it ok though and in the end the crowd (including my 3 month old daughter Amélie Kay) were all singing and dancing to the hits; ‘July’, ‘Mexico’, ‘Bestow’ etc.

He has a regular drummer that he plays with, but that week I was trying to get a hint about whether he would give me the pleasure of playing with him again as a dep.  I’m not great at networking or being upfront about asking. So I didn’t ask. I’ve noticed that sometimes singers/band leaders will go on the overall empirical experience of a gig and that influences their judgement on how we actually did as a band. It was a tough gig for sure but we had that great rehearsal so maybe that counts for something! Time will tell if I get another opportunity! He is a real gent and a real wit, a brilliant songwriter, and handy at the oul' art !
